Gather ye rosebuds while ye may
Robert Herrick, 1591 - 1674

The echoes of this famous line have been reverberating in my mind.  The words feel like a gentle reminder of the value of time, a call to take action and to do what you can to make the most of the gift that is life.

Here is the rest of the stanza:

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying.

In other words, "THIS is it."  No matter what, this moment is IT; this moment IS the gift.  Are you aware of this and if so, how often?

Without debate, this moment, right now, is the biggest moment of your life.  How could it NOT be?  This moment is the only one that is the most real, most vital and most potent.  This moment is ripe with possibilities for change and growth.

Is it possible for all moments to be imbued with such rich intention?

Is making your bed or commuting to work rosebud gathering experiences?  Why couldn't they be?  Can't they be infused with deeper meaning and purpose?  If a moment feels like it's only scratching the surface, then surely there must be more fertile soil below.  Your lens on life will widen and blossom if you have the intention to make ordinary moments exceptional.  Afterall, it's a choice.  Why not choose to gather the rosebuds while you can?

There is another path - another set of choices...

  • to hide

  • to be disconnected from your body and mind

  • to be numb

  • to carve out a safe and controlled path

All of these feel like leaning away from life.  These choices, whether conscious or not, don't feel like gathering rosebuds at all.  They feel like they create a space for negative thoughts to fester into your reality and allow the outer world take control of your happiness.

Are your daily actions, both consequential and inconsequential, rosebud worthy?  Or, expressed another way, are your daily actions beautifully aligned to live the most auspicious life possible?

Gather while ye may and step out of your comfort zone, to be bold and to take action.  Let yourself feel vulnerable so you can lean into and become fully apart of the ride of life.

All choices matter.  Make it so.

I'm having a flashback right now from my days in acting school, NYC, circa 1990.  One of my professors use to drill this line into our heads:

"I am what I am because I am.  I am now already that which I want to be." (unknown)

I can't find who owns the rights to these words, but they make a compelling point that has a lot to do with gathering rosebuds.  These words are a signal for acceptance.  Today, can you, no matter what, accept where you are?  Can you be fully content with the work in progress that you see in the mirror?  What peace would be brought to your mind if you could feel this deep space of contentment?  Is it not worth leaning into so it can be owned?

Then, by embodying contentment, a door opens to eagerly "gather ye rosebuds while ye may" and knowing in the next breaths ahead, you can expand, grow, and build a life that is more abundant than the one you had just breaths ago.

We can agree, that no single work of prose, like this one, will transform you into contentment, presence, and abundance, although I will wish it so.  At the very least, these words can create a spark.  Perhaps the tiniest of sparks to be open to the fact that there is more to living than your current lens on life.  That, in fact, there are deeper awarenesses to be gathered.   And if you are willing to search, you will surely find them.  Afterall, what you see IS what you get.

I've been gathering rosebuds for as long as I can remember.  But I've leaned on the help of many kinds of teachers to guide me to the right tools and means to get to this moment, as I compose these words.  And now, it is my deepest quest, to help you in the same way if you wish it so.
